Now we know fundraising for the Y Turkey Trot Charity 5K may seem a little intimidating, but we’re here to make it simple. Here are our top tips to get you off to a flying start this Turkey Trot season:
Take a beat
The money raised from the Y Turkey Trot (you!) makes a huge difference to the lives of many children and families in Central Maryland. Recently a couple of our financial aid recipients shared with us the impact the support has had on their lives:
- “My son (with special needs) has had a membership for the past several years. He enjoys swimming and working with his personal trainer. It has made an amazing difference in his life. He’s become more independent, lost weight and improved his overall health. It’s been one of the best things for him and we’re very pleased with the staff, programs, and support he’s received.”
• “I am so thankful for my Y membership. My family was given a scholarship for the membership and I can not even state the impact it has had. The Y is a safe place for my children to meet up with their friends to swim, play, and just generally have fun. The people are friendly and helpful and the classes are wonderful.”
So before you start fundraising consider taking a minute and thinking about the difference you want to make it the community. You can also share it with us on social media by using the hashtag #whyitrot
As with many things in life, the most important step is the first one… and we’re helping you take it! Immediately after you register for the Y Turkey Trot Charity 5K, you’ll receive an email asking you to claim your fundraising page. All Turkey Trot fundraising pages are set up through Classy, our online registration/fundraising/donation platform. Our (slightly biased) advice on what to do next? Claim it and get your fundraising party started as soon as possible! Remember, once you’ve created your page, you can log back in at any time.
One of the best things about your Classy fundraising page is that you can personalize it to your heart’s content. We encourage you to upload a snazzy profile picture and tell us a little bit about yourself. From here, you’ll also be able to share your page on social media, find your fundraising page URL, and access language to help you with your fundraising task.
Sharing is caring
Once you’ve made your page distinctly yours (yay!), it’s time to reach out to your friends and family for support. Asking five friends for $25 could make a world of difference for a child in your community! It’s up to you how you do it, but we encourage a varied approach that includes asking in person, over email, and via social media. If you need a little bit of extra support, you can find some helpful fundraising resources on our website and by logging into your Classy account.
When asking for support, we recommend you try and be specific as possible and tell your donors the impact their dollars will make. For instance, $38 gives a day of Y Preschool to a child living in poverty, helping them to discover the joys of learning and prepare them for success in kindergarten and beyond. $120 gives a series of Y Swim Lessons to a child in the community, teaching them water safety and helping to develop a lifelong love of swimming.
Remember to say thank you
Once your donations start rolling in, the next step is thanking your supporters. You can do so via your fundraising page, in person, by tagging them on Facebook, or by sending personal emails.
